A Study of Demographic Transition in Andhra Pradesh: Determinants and Consequences
 

PFI in collaboration with the Gujarat Institute of Development Research, Ahmedabad and the Academy for Nursing Studies, Hyderabad has initiated a study on Demographic Transition in Andhra Pradesh: Determinants and Consequences. The study covers 80 sample villages from four districts, namely Kurnool, Nizamabad, Krishna and East Godavari, of Andhra Pradesh.

 

The main goal of the study is t o understand and analyze the levels/ trends in fertility and mortality in Andhra Pradesh within the socio-political and developmental context of the state. The main objectives of the study are:

 
To analyse socio-economic factors associated with fall in fertility and mortality levels and trends in Andhra Pradesh.
 
To study the bio-demographic factors associated with demographic transition in Andhra Pradesh.
 
To analyse the behavioural and cultural factors associated with fall in fertility and mortality in Andhra Pradesh.
 
To assess the influence of the health and family welfare services on decline in fertility in Andhra Pradesh.
 
To review the contribution of women’s empowerment processes to fertility decline.
 
To review the socio-political mechanisms initiated and implemented in the state and assess their influence on demographic transition.
   
The study is programmed to be completed by mid 2006.
