Adolescent Initiatives in Uttaranchal (AIU)

In association with the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust, Dehradun (Rural Development Institute) and with part funding from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), the PFI started a three-year project on Adolescent Initiatives in Uttaranchal, from March 2003. Through this project, 32,700 adolescents in the age group of 13-19 years from three blocks in three districts of Dehra Dun, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital of Uttaranchal are reached. The main objectives of the project are to:

  •

To increase Knowledge, Attitude and Practices among adolescents on reproductive and sexual health.
To enhance general and reproductive health of adolescents in the age group of 13 to 19 years.
To promote safe sexual behaviour and lifestyle amongst adolescents in the project area.
To enhance adolescent maternal health among the married adolescents in the age group of 13 to 19 years.
To promote career and development opportunities for adolescents in the project areas.

An NGO directory on adolescent health in the state of Uttaranchal was developed and made available on CDs. Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) and Community Needs Assessment (CNA) was done with 18 NGOs in three districts and the findings of the same were incorporated for designing the baseline survey questionnaire. Four NGOs - VTTDS, AASTHA, HIHT and CHIRAG were finally selected for implementing the programme as per the Detailed Implementation Plan (DIP), which was developed.

The Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) took technical assistance from the “Thought-Shop Foundation” for developing communication materials. Based on the findings of the baseline survey, the BCC Modules were prepared. The programme is called "Pehal" and the logo for Pehal was finalised, and calendar and posters were developed. The project attire (jacket + cap), brag sheet on AIU in Hindi, a Pehal Radio Phone in Program, a newsletter, Dehleez radio series, a Nukkad Natak cassette on Gender Discrimination, an anthem and a website on AIU were developed. The implementing NGOs were trained on the use of PEHAL KIT, BCC ,on Counselling on Reproductive and Sexual Health issues and on MIS formats.

An Adolescent Vocational Cell has been established at the Rural Development Institute of HIHT for initiating career development prospects for youth in Uttaranchal. A career development reference directory has been developed outlining the organisations providing technical and financial assistance for vocational development.

The Resource Centre at HIHT is run by two adolescent girl volunteers, who act as informants and youth mobilisers. The Centre was upgraded with furniture and more resource material. Adolescent Resource Centres have also been established by all NGOs with technical and resource support from HIHT Resource Centre. A rotational mobile library with 50 books was initiated by HIHT for all NGOs. This library will cover all the villages in the project area.

BCC materials like posters on safe motherhood, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, RTI/STDs, and contraceptives, audiovisuals and Nukkad Natak were developed. The All India Radio, Najibabad radio station was contacted for transmission of the radio-phone in programme.

A monitoring tool (field-tested) was developed for recording the activities implemented and MIS is being maintained. Career fairs were organized in schools by the three partner NGOs in February and March 2005 and were well received by 700 adolescents.

Training on BCC was organized at HIHT for the field functionaries, which covered exercises like making puppets. Fifty Dais were trained from three partner NGO areas for three days at Jaspur by HIHT resource persons at the local PHC for 10 days.

Three hundred and fifty adolescent groups have been formed so far and around 268 anganwadis and 98 contraceptive depots are functioning in the project area. A total of 10721 adolescents were provided with the services. A total of 79,238 adolescents participated at various events/programmes organized by HIHT, during the year under report.
