Adolescent Reproductive Health Project in Jharkhand

Two projects are being implemented by the Foundation in association with Parivar Kalyan Sansthan (Tata Engineering Co.) and Tata Steel Family Initiatives Foundation in the slum areas of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. Each partner is covering an adolescent population of around 20000 in the age group of 12-19 years. The main objectives of both the projects are to:

  •

Provide sexuality education through adolescent reproductive health sessions in schools & kishore/kishori groups.
Provide life-skills to increase their decision making power and negotiating skills.
Promote use of condom amongst the youth.
Create awareness about STD, HIV/AIDS.
Promote gender equality and equity.
Create responsibility of child spacing and child bearing amongst males & females.
Provide wide and informed range of contraceptives through clinics.
Provide youth friendly atmosphere in the clinics for kishores and kishoris.
Refer patients to clinics for reproductive health related problems.

After the MoUs were signed, both the agencies recruited project staff. Social mapping was done in the project areas with the help of the local opinion leaders. The small groups of adolescents called ‘Dals’ – Kishore Dals (boys) and Kishori Dals (girls) were formed in the communities. The members of the Dals received Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH) sessions from the field workers of the project. Being a member of a group gives the adolescents bargaining power and helps in identifying with each other’s problems.

Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health training programmes are conducted in schools for classes 8, 9 & 10, for both boys and girls, after holding a sensitisation programme for the teachers. The Teachers’ Programme helps to build their capacities to act as resources for the students and to ensure participation of the students in the Health Melas. Similarly sensitisation meetings were held for parents and other opinion leaders in the communities for supporting this programme.

In the Melas, the adolescents displayed stalls on various topics of ARSH, presented plays, speeches, dance dramas etc. Special days like World AIDS day, World Population Day, International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women, International Women’s Day etc. were observed through IEC activities. Clinical services were provided at six locations in the Parivar Kalyan Sansthan project area and at five locations in Tata Steel Family Initiatives Foundation project area. One general clinic and one antenatal clinic are held every week at all the six locations. Services like ANC, RTI/STI treatment and Family Planning were provided at these centres.
