Naya Savera

The Foundation in association with Lakshmi Cement (A division of JK Corp. Limited) has started an Integrated Family Welfare Programme, “Naya Savera” in ten villages of Pindwara Tehsil of Sirohi district in Rajasthan for a period of four years covering a population of 27,000. The main objectives of the project are:

  •

Capacity building of community level volunteers on health issues including RCH.
Raising awareness and knowledge of the community stakeholders on general health and RCH issues through IEC (Information, Education and Communication) and BCC (Behavioural Change Communication) programmes.
Providing basic quality RCH services in the target areas through a mobile van.

The baseline survey of the project has been carried out. The findings revealed that 34% of women have undergone the three ANC check-ups, 53% had home deliveries and 28% received post natal care.

Fifty eight percent of mothers fed colostrum to the newborn baby while 56% started supplementary feeding after four months and complete immunization is being done only for twenty eight percent of the babies. The report also revealed that there was 6% prevalence of diarrhoea and 15% of ARI in the target area.

Eighty four percent of the respondents had knowledge of the main reason for the acceptance of family planning for limiting family size, while 60% had knowledge of any contraception. A contraceptive prevalence rate of 30% was reported and the main motivators for the current use were husbands (66%) and intention to use contraceptives in future existed amongst thirty nine percent of the respondents. The prevalence rate of RTI is thirty four percent. Thirty three percent reported that they have awareness on HIV/AIDS while 40% have sought treatment for RTI.

A three-day training was conducted for Village Level Motivators (VLMs) (one VLM each in 10 villages) and both trained and untrained Traditional Birth Attendants have been identified. Group meetings and mass meetings of IEC have been organized. The topics covered were health and hygiene, sanitation, family planning methods, breast feeding, safe motherhood and immunization. A meeting with the Block PHC (Swaroopganj) officials was held to build rapport, and condoms, IFA tablets and IEC materials were mobilized from the Block Primary Health Centre.

Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) services are provided through a mobile van in the target area. The mobile team visits two villages every day. Demonstrations on preparation of Oral Rehydration Solution, washing hands with soap and water before meals, two exhibitions on RCH, hygiene, safe drinking water and sanitation were organized during the year under report.
