Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Field Interventions :

Total management of Essential RCH & Primary Health Care through Public Private
Partnership : A model and innovative project.

This innovative project is being implemented by Karuna Trust, Karnataka, aims to demonstrate models of public Primary Health Centers that effectively delevers the essential RCH & primary health care services. The project is covering one Primary Health Center area in each of the five socio - demographically backward districts of Bagalkot, Bidar, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur and 2PHCs in Bellary district of Karnataka. This intervention would benefit more than two lakhs of population in this region.

The main objectives of this project includes:

  •

To manage routine functioning of select Government Primary Health Centers and strengthen them into model PHCs.
To maximise utilisation of RCH services at the sub-centers of the select model PCHs
To influence and facilitate change for improved health seeking behaviour in the communities covered by the modelPCHs

0000The RCH services were started after the baseline survey with the help of a mobile van in April 2002. Liaison was established with the government for supplies and support through ANMs and Anganwadis. A midterm evaluation was carried out by TCSRD in ten villages, which revealed that the IEC coverage needs to be improved and priority should be given to the field level activities for strengthening the RCH coverage, even though a sizeable number of women are availing the RCH services.

The services like maternal health, treatment of RTI/STI, family planning and immunization are provided. Information Education and Communication (IEC) activities are directed towards bringing attitudinal changes in men and women towards family planning, increasing acceptance of services offered by Primary Health Centres and dispelling myths related to immunization.

The group meetings of women and men were held in every village on various RCH issues, like vaccine preventable diseases, diarrhoea and contraceptive choices (specially highlighting spacing methods). Banner exhibitions on different health issues were conducted in different parts of the village. Skits were organized with school children in six of the villages addressing issues like age at marriage.

Training on first aid for village level volunteers was organised in collaboration with St. Johns Ambulance and training on “five cleans” for TBAs/Dais was organised in collaboration with PATH, Lucknow.
