Training Programme on Management-Cum Behaviour Change Communication

The Population Foundation of India, in association with the Centre for Media Studies (CMS), New Delhi implemented a three-year training programme on ‘Management-cum-Behavioural Change Communication’ with the objectives of enhancing conceptual understanding and developing skills of the NGO personnel for effective communication and operational management; understanding the management aspects of RCH projects and increasing efficiency in project management and implementation with feedback, need assessment and area specific analysis.

The project activities had been initiated in the year 2002. A database of NGOs working in and around the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi was developed. A need assessment survey was conducted at two levels – for field level workers and for middle-level managers of NGOs working in and around Delhi on Reproductive and Child Health and Family Planning issues before finalization of the course curriculum. In the first two years, CMS organized training programmes with PFI for middle and senior level officials of NGOs. The Centre for Media Studies conducted twelve training programmes on Behavioral Change Communication and trained two hundred and five personnel from various NGOs serving the communities in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, on RCH related issues. Thirty six days of training programmes have been conducted on various management issues for middle/senior level managers of Delhi based NGOs. Some of the topics covered on the management training were: (i) financial management, (ii) fund raising, (iii) effective communication, (iv) project management, (v) human resource, and (vi) financial management.

A three day exclusive training programme on Behaviour Change Communication in the context of RCH programmes was organized for CASP-PLAN development workers and para medical officials. The objective of the training programme was to enhance the skills, facilitate learning and understand the fundamentals of Behaviour Change Communication, Counselling and Reproductive and Child Health.

Concurrent evaluation, taking a sample of twenty-five participants from fifteen NGOs who attended BCC and management training programmes, has been conducted. The purpose of conducting the concurrent evaluation was to understand how the participants have been implementing their learning skills in their projects and designing paid training programmes according to the needs during the final year of the project. A questionnaire, for the evaluation, was designed, in consultation with the monitoring and evaluation team of PFI.
