The
Population Foundation of India with the help of Eleanora
Images, New Delhi undertook the production of a tele-film,
titled ‘Kinara’ on No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV)
and three promotional spots (promos). The main objectives
of the film and the promos are (i) to sensitize and make
the audience aware of NSV, (ii) to bring about behavioural
and attitudinal change towards male participation in contraception,
and an overall demand driven approach for men to opt for
the easiest method of contraception i.e. NSV within the culture
context.
The film
and promos focus on: (i) the need for population stabilization,
(ii) the question of male participation in contraception
by opting for the procedure, (iii) the wide range of choices
for contraception (iv) the empowerment of people to make
an informed decision by choosing a method suitable to their
needs, and (v) NSV as a means of safe and effective contraception.
The film is expected to have one national telecast during
prime time, which would ensure nationwide coverage and
also in all the nine Hindi speaking regions. The film would
also be shown during the weekly programme titled ‘Kalyani’ on
the national channel of Doordarshan, sponsored by the Government
of India.
A committee
was constituted to review the scripts of the tele-film
and the promos. The committee comprised Prof Kaza of Maulana
Azad Medical College – an expert on technical
aspects of NSV, Ms Geeta Bamezai, Communication Expert with
the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Lalrintluangi,
Deputy Commissioner, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
Mr Samaresh Sengupta, Consultant (IEC), and Dr Nalini Abraham.
The production of the film was completed. There are three
versions of the film – a twenty seven minute version,
a fifteen minute version and a ten minute version. Three
promotional spots (of 60 seconds, 30 seconds and 10 seconds
duration) have also been made.
A preview
of the film and the spots was organized at the office of
the ‘Doordarshan
News’ channel. Copies
of the film/spots have been made and sent to all PFI partners,
government officials and the Film Division. The Foundation
is in constant touch with the Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare regarding the telecast on the ‘Doordarshan’.
