Promotion of No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) through the electronic media: production of a tele-film and three promotional spots

The Population Foundation of India with the help of Eleanora Images, New Delhi undertook the production of a tele-film, titled ‘Kinara’ on No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) and three promotional spots (promos). The main objectives of the film and the promos are (i) to sensitize and make the audience aware of NSV, (ii) to bring about behavioural and attitudinal change towards male participation in contraception, and an overall demand driven approach for men to opt for the easiest method of contraception i.e. NSV within the culture context.

The film and promos focus on: (i) the need for population stabilization, (ii) the question of male participation in contraception by opting for the procedure, (iii) the wide range of choices for contraception (iv) the empowerment of people to make an informed decision by choosing a method suitable to their needs, and (v) NSV as a means of safe and effective contraception. The film is expected to have one national telecast during prime time, which would ensure nationwide coverage and also in all the nine Hindi speaking regions. The film would also be shown during the weekly programme titled ‘Kalyani’ on the national channel of Doordarshan, sponsored by the Government of India.

A committee was constituted to review the scripts of the tele-film and the promos. The committee comprised Prof Kaza of Maulana Azad Medical College – an expert on technical aspects of NSV, Ms Geeta Bamezai, Communication Expert with the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Lalrintluangi, Deputy Commissioner, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Mr Samaresh Sengupta, Consultant (IEC), and Dr Nalini Abraham. The production of the film was completed. There are three versions of the film – a twenty seven minute version, a fifteen minute version and a ten minute version. Three promotional spots (of 60 seconds, 30 seconds and 10 seconds duration) have also been made.

A preview of the film and the spots was organized at the office of the ‘Doordarshan News’ channel. Copies of the film/spots have been made and sent to all PFI partners, government officials and the Film Division. The Foundation is in constant touch with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare regarding the telecast on the ‘Doordarshan’. channel. The film has received good media coverage.
